KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Both lanes of Interstate 40 West in Cocke County have been closed following an early morning rockslide between Mile Markers 450 and 451.
Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Geotechnical Engineers are continuing to evaluate the slide and are currently developing a plan to stabilize the mountainside. An emergency contract will also be initiated to clean-up debris from this morning’s slide.
There is currently no estimate for when I-40 West will reopen.

Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk This Super Bowl Sunday
Law enforcement will work overtime to crack down on drunk drivers
Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Office, Tennessee Titans and Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security are once again teaming up to remind Tennessee football fans that real Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk this Super Bowl weekend.
“If your Super Bowl game plan includes celebrating with alcohol make sure you have a sober, designated driver,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Law enforcement officials will be working overtime to ensure that Tennessee’s roads are safe, so if you drink and drive this weekend, chances are you’ll be caught.”
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Just after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) reopened one lane of traffic near Mile Marker 451 on Interstate 40 West in Cocke County, following the cleanup of a rockslide that occurred on January 31, 2012.
Contract crews began clean-up operations last Thursday and were successful in removing an approximate 1500 ton boulder that was in danger of falling onto the interstate. This was the first phase of repairs at that location. The second phase, which will likely begin in late March, will be more extensive, involving further stabilization of the remaining slope. TDOT will keep one lane of traffic open until the second phase begins, and will make all efforts to maintain one lane of traffic as further repairs are completed.
NASHVILLE–The Tennessee Department of Transportation is excited to announce a major milestone in the development of the Interstate 55 and Crump Boulevard Interchange project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has approved the Final Environmental Impact Study for the interchange, allowing the project to move into the final design phase.
The approval comes after an extensive study and review of a number of different alignment choices for the interchange. The selected “Z-1” design was developed in response to strong input from members of the community and guidance from the Federal Highway Administration. The Z-1 alignment will avoid all displacements and does address concerns that were raised by residents early in the project development phase.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer joined Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security (TDOSHS) Commissioner Bill Gibbons today to sign a new agreement between the two agencies regarding the quick clearance of highway incidents. The goal of the agreement is to ensure public safety and restore Tennessee roadways to full capacity as soon as possible following highway incidents.
TDOT and TDOSHS began working on the new agreement following an incident in December 2011 that closed Interstate 40 in Wilson County for nearly 12 hours, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded overnight.
